ORSANCO River Sweep

June

ORSANCO, or the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, is an interstate group representing 8 of the 14 states containing a portion of the Ohio River Watershed; Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, New York, Kentucky, Virginia, Indiana, and Illinois. From their website,

“ORSANCO operates programs to improve water quality in the Ohio River and its tributaries, including: setting waste water discharge standards; performing biological assessments; monitoring for the chemical and physical properties of the waterways; and conducting special surveys and studies.”

One initiative is the annual ORSANCO River Sweep. Since 1989, this event organizes and supplies materials to volunteer groups and smaller organizations to host litter clean-up events on the Ohio River or its tributaries.

Jacobs Creek’s outflow to the Youghiogheny River (which subsequently enters the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers) make us eligible to participate in the annual ORSANCO River Sweep, organizing volunteers to remove pounds of trash from Jacobs Creek and the surrounding land.
